New Year’s Resolution 2017: Inner Beauty Tune-up!
As a Salon Professional I spend a majority of my time helping people achieve their ideal outer beauty. But there is so much more to looking and feeling your best. How do you define outer beauty? Great hair, nice skin, toned body…. I’ll bet your definition has a direct correlation to your 2017 resolutions. Get in shape, eat right, work out, drink more water…
Let’s take a brief look at some more meaningful opportunities for our 2017 resolutions.
When was the last time you tried to define “inner beauty?” Take a second write down your definition of inner beauty now. Did your answers sound different than your definition of outer beauty? If so, I imagine they sound something like this: caring, generous, helpful, considerate and empathetic. Now take a second and write down some of the things you have done lately that correlate with the attributes you listed. This exercise is typically easier to do during the holidays when we are all filled with generosity and the “Christmas Spirit.” Now think about this, does your list add up year-round? For most of us, the sad truth is no.
In our society there is a huge focus on how to “fix” our outer appearances with things such as creams, serums, injections, gym memberships and plastic surgery. As if looking good will improve the world… Really? How will having a perfect butt or looking 20 years younger make the world a better place to live? I DO believe that looking your best will help you feel great and allow you the confidence to be great, but I also worry that we have forgotten the bigger picture.
Think back, how great did you feel after you donated to your local holiday food drive, held a door for an elderly neighbor or complimented your coworker for a job well done? This is where I feel we can make real improvements within ourselves and our society. Have you ever noticed that “do-gooders” typically have a bright, healthy appearance, empathetic eyes or a contagious smile? This is due to one simple fact: When you feel good about what you are doing and how you touch the lives of those around you, you will shine! Your smile will be bigger, your eyes brighter and you will feel enriched.
Please join me in a few small steps to make 2017 our best year yet.
1. Be empathetic and not judgmental of those we don’t understand.
2. Be supportive of equality on all societal fronts, no matter how different someone may be from your ideals.
3. Offer compliments and smiles to those around you every day.
4. Help people around you in the simplest of ways, such as holding doors or carrying someone’s groceries.
5. Take the time to reflect on your actions and how they affect those around us.
6. Finally, don’t forget that the homeless, underprivileged, disabled and elderly population need our help year-round!
I whole heartedly believe that taking the time to tune up our inner beauty will to change the world one day at a time!
